Read our Solar Thermal guide: requirements, how it works and what to expect
Requirements and our panels
There are only 2 requirements to install solar thermal panels. So install solar panels your house must face between east, south or west and the area of roof that the panels are installed in must not be cast in shadow.
You generally don't need planning permission to install thermal panels: they're classed as a "permitted development" (with exceptions for listed buildings, conservation areas or AONBs).
We install 2 types of solar thermal panels: flat panel collectors and evacuated tube collectors. Flat panel collectors are cheaper however evacuated tube collectors perform more efficiently, especially throughout winter.
Installation and benefits
Installing a solar thermal system takes no more than 5 working days, and is normally much quicker. There's no mess and we automatically integrate it into your current heating and boiler system.
As soon as it is installed the thermal system starts heating your water in place of your boiler. You use your boiler only for topping up the hot water tank and for radiators.
Also, the Government's proposed Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme (RHI) will financially reward you for generating your own heat.
How it works
There are two parts to solar thermal heating systems: the collector and the thermal store. A collector uses the sun's energy to heat water, and is normally fixed onto the roof. Heated water is pumped from the collector into the thermal store (tank).
The thermal store holds heated water from the thermal system as well as coils for a conventional boiler to heat the water, if necessary.
When an appliance needs hot water, it is drawn from the thermal store using water heated by the solar collector. If the water needs to be warmed up slightly, the conventional boiler is used.
