Councillor Hughes' PV Installation

The backstory

Councillor Hughes is a prominent member of the local Green Party and has a 1980's property built in the style of a mid-50's building to match in with other surrounding properties. He was keen to get as large a solar PV system as possible onto his property.

How we installed Solar PV

Councillor Hughes purchased 12-panel (2.76kWp) PV system utilising Moser Baer Panels. Unfortunately, when we undertook our technical survey, we found that it would be impossible to fit 12 panels onto his roof. Working with Cllr Hughes we reassessed the whole property and decided that the best course of action would be to install 8 panels onto his house roof and 4 panels onto his garage roof. The house and the garage systems each have their own SMA inverters connected back to a new distribution board. Many houses of this age do not have suitable distribution boards so often need to be upgraded or replaced, fortunately Cllr Hughes had budgeted for this to happen, but just needed suitable technical advice as to what sort of distribution board would be suitable for connecting the photovoltaic system. Once the system was commissioned it generated 10kWh of electricity on its first day (not even a complete day as commissioning took place late morning).

The result

Councillor Hughes is absolutely delighted with the PV system and has been described by one member of the installation team as being "like a kid in a toy shop!"
